Parents of Rare Quadruplets Thank God for Successful 'Miracle' Surgery; Couple Pregnant With Two Sets of Identical Twins
The mother and father of quadruplets are thanking God after surgery to save all four babies in utero was successful.
"God is GOOD! Prayers have been answered!! Miracles continue to take place. ALL the babies survived the surgery, they heard 4 heartbeats today! We want to thank all of you for being part of our miracle!! We don't know how to say THANK YOU enough!!" Ashley and Tyson Gardner posted to their Facebook page.
The couple spent eight years trying to conceive and finally turned to fertility treatments to help. However, they got the shock of their lives when they learned they were pregnant … with quadruplets! To make things even more surprising, the quadruplets are two sets of identical twins, an extreme rarity for parents of multiples. During a gender reveal party, they learned that they were expecting four baby girls.
Unfortunately, at 19 weeks gestation, Ashley had to undergo emergency surgery to correct a problem known as TTTS: twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, in which blood flows unequally between a set of twins. Doctors discovered that she had also already begun to dilate, which could have led to premature labor. She was given medication to prevent any contractions and surgery to save the twins.
"It went great," the couple posted on their Facebook page. "Dr. Chmait smiled and said, 'This has been a good day!' Our tears have been replaced with relief and continue to pray for the babies safety and continued 'baking' for a good long time! Ashley will be put on bed rest from here on out. The doctor just came out and said the babies are cured of twin to twin transfusion … he said that part couldn't have gone better!"
The couple's story went public after a friend captured Ashley's reaction to learning she was pregnant with quadruplets and posted the photos online. Since then, the couple has kept the public informed of the babies' progress. The four girls are due in December, but for now, Ashley and Tyson are hoping to get the babies to 28 weeks gestation, when they can safely deliver them.
"Thank you for your kind messages over the past week it helped them more than you will ever know!!" a friend posted on their website, noting that the couple was back home in Utah.
