Patti LaBelle Slapped with Lawsuit for Cursing, Throwing Things at Toddler
A NYC couple, for angrily cursing, throwing things, and attempting to punch a baby and her mother in a hotel lobby, is suing famous singer Patti LaBelle.
LaBelle, 67, was staying in the Donald Trump hotel while appearing in the Broadway production “Fela!” late last year, according to Kevin and Roseanna Monk, when the songstress approached Roseanna about her child running loose in the lobby. LaBelle implied that her parenting skills left something to be desired.
It was then, Davis claimed that the singer flew into a rage, “started cursing, and screaming and hurled the water bottle she held at the mother and daughter.
It was enough that the child began to weep uncontrollably, and immediately vomited.
Samuel L. Davis, the Monks’ attorney, alleges that what happened is decidedly LaBelle’s fault.
“My client responded as most people would,” said Davis to ABC News, “‘Lady, mind your own business.’”
LaBelle did not stop there; the vocalist followed Roseanna to her car, all the while being chastised by the mother for upsetting the toddler.
“That’s when Patti lost it,” Davis said. “She lunged at her, tried to punch her, and had to be restrained by her entourage. The bodyguard had to get out and drag Patti into the car.”
The Monks did not originally intend to sue the singer. They would have let things go had LaBelle apologized, and donated to a children’s cancer charity of the couple’s choice. However, LaBelle’s camp said no.
The couple also complained to the police, but neither LaBelle nor any of her entourage were held at fault or arrested.
Because LaBelle refused to return any phone calls or request, the Monks felt suing was the only option.
“Someone's got to teach her even a diva can't attack and frighten and assault regular people in the building," Davis explained.
Therefore, legal action has been taken, with the couple demanding damages for the wrongdoing and verbal assault.
“They’re not major damages,” Davis explained. “They’re more punitive than anything. We agreed that the proceeds of the case are going to a children’s charity.”
Even though the baby had difficulties sleeping since the episode, the couple was hesitant to slap LaBelle with a lawsuit. When the Monks heard of the R&B singer’s alleged assault of a West Point cadet in June of this year, that was the tipping point for the concerned parents.
“My clients will feel good about any outcome that holds her responsible for her actions,” Davis added.
