Paul Pelosi's accused attacker David DePape: 4 things to know
4. An illegal immigrant who had two children with a nudist activist
Fox News reported Monday that DePape is an illegal immigrant originally born in Canada who emigrated to the U.S. about 20 years ago. An official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement told the news outlet that his status as an illegal immigrant stems from a “longtime” visa overstay.
During most of his time in the U.S., DePape carried on a relationship with Oxane Taub, currently incarcerated in a women’s prison for attempting to abduct a 14-year-old boy. Taub discussed her relationship with DePape in an interview with local news outlet ABC7. As detailed in the report, Taub is a well-known nudist activist who has participated in multiple protests over the years.
Taub told ABC7 that she had known DePape for more than 20 years and had two children with him, adding that they had lived together until about seven years ago. “He is mentally ill. He has been for a long time,” she said.
Taub noted that after disappearing for a year nearly a decade ago, “he came back in very bad shape.” Upon returning, she recalled, “He thought he was Jesus” and “was constantly paranoid, thinking people were after him.”
“It took a good year or two to get back to, you know, being halfway normal,” Taub added. When asked if he ever demonstrated “any aggression toward politicians” or held “extreme political views,” she responded, “When I met him, he was only 20 years old, and he didn’t have any experience in politics, and he was very much in alignment with my views.”
She added, “I absolutely admire Nancy Pelosi. I would like to express my deepest apology to Nancy Pelosi and her husband for the terrible tragic thing that happened.”
