'Penny Dreadful' Season 3 Spoilers: New Characters Expected to Be Introduced
The upcoming season of "Penny Dreadful" is expected to bring two new interesting characters to the series.
The series will bring a character from the 1886 novel "The Strange Case of Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which was written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The novel is focused on a scientist who concocted a serum to hide a part of himself from the Victorian religious community. However, his serum goes awry when it releases his alter ego instead, Mr. Hyde.
It was revealed that Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde will both be played by Shazad Latif. The actor was able to speak to Den of Geek about his upcoming two roles in "Penny Dreadful." He was asked whether the upcoming portrayal of Dr. Jekyll will be faithful to the character created by Stevenson, to which he replied, "He has jealousy that very visibly builds up, that will remain very much the same, the ideals, the ambition, the darkness. This show takes license with how the characters come together anyway but the character, yes."
The executive producer of the series, John Logan, was also able to share some details about the upcoming season of "Penny Dreadful." He explained to Entertainment Weekly that they wanted to bring Dr. Jekyll into the series in order to introduce a new gothic character.
He explained that he initially wanted to bring Dr. Moreau from the novel titled "The Island of Doctor Moreau." But they were not able to get the rights for the story. Nevertheless, he explained that the duality in Dr. Jekyll's character was a good fit for the series.
He said, "So much of Penny Dreadful has to do with duality: with the good and the bad and the dark and the light, and there's no character more effective in dramatizing that than Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, obviously. So bringing in Dr. Jekyll as an old school friend of Dr. Frankenstein [Harry Treadaway] I thought was really exciting."
"Penny Dreadful" season 3 is expected to air on Showtime this May 1st.
