'Percy Jackson': 'Percy Jackson 3' or TV Series Not Happening, Says Author

Almost four years have passed since "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," the second installment in the "Percy Jackson" film franchise, hit the big screen. Though it was mentioned a few years ago that a third movie for the franchise will not be happening, many are still clamoring and hoping for one. There are also rumors that a "Percy Jackson" TV series would be developed instead.

Rick Riordan, author of the "Percy Jackson" book series, finally took it upon himself to finally give a definitive answer regarding the possibility of a third film installment in the franchise or the development of a TV adaptation. Much to the disappointment of some fans, he said neither will be happening in the foreseeable future.

The author briefly talked about the rumors of a "Percy Jackson 3" film and a TV series in a blog post published on his official website. Riordan explained that the rights to adapt the book series into film or television was exclusively sold to 20th Century Fox, and the company has not shown any indication that they will be continuing with the franchise in either medium.

"The rights for television/film to anything involving Percy's world, including sequels like 'Heroes of Olympus' and 'Trials of Apollo,' are owned solely and forever by Fox," Riordan explained. "As far as I am aware, which is not very far, they have no plans to do anything further with those rights."

Riordan also revealed that he tried to buy back the rights to the books from Fox but the company declined to sell them back at any price. Neither is the company open to selling the rights to another company to make a film or TV adaptation possible.

Though Riordan shot down rumors of another "Percy Jackson" film or a TV series based on the books, he mentioned another medium that will allow fans to enjoy the series outside of the books.

The author announced that "The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical" will be holding Off-Broadway performances from March 23 until May 6. Riordan revealed on Twitter that the reason behind the musical production was to "make book fans happy."

Though Riordan gave a definitive answer to the future of "Percy Jackson" as a film franchise or a TV adaptation, many have not given up hope. Some have even petitioned DreamWorks and Disney to create a cartoon TV series.
