'Peter Pan' Movie News: Disney to Give Character a Live-Action Movie, Too

Disney continues to haul its archive of animation features and turn them to live-action movies. According to the latest report, the studio is proceeding with one of its known characters' live action feature, Peter Pan, which it made into an animated feature back in 1953.

With Peter Pan, fans can now look forward to a long roster of classic Disney animations that will be given a live-action treatment. Well-loved classic stories that the studio has earlier announced to be incarnated anew via a live-action films are "Alice Through the Looking Glass," "Pete's Dragon," "Beauty and the Beast," "Cruella," "Maleficent 2," "Dumbo," "Mulan," "Winnie the Pooh," "Pinocchio," "Genies," "Night on Bald Mountain," "The Sword in the Stone," and "Tinker Bell." Disney is also planning a sequel for the currently showing live-action feature of "Jungle Book."

According to reports, "Peter Pan" will be developed almost at the same time with Reese Witherspoon's "Tinkerbell" as it is possible for the two films to share cast and characters. Director David Lowery will helm the live-action feature of "Peter Pan" after the live-action feature of their "Pete's Dragon" is shown on August 2 this year.

The most recent incarnation of the character who refuses to grow old was via Warner Bros. 2015 film simply entitled "Pan." Apart from failing to get the nod of the critics, the movie failed commercially, too, as its ticket sales only registered $128,388,320 as its worldwide gross. The film stars young actor Levi Miller as Peter Pan.

On the other hand, the most successful live-action version of Peter Pan is the 1991 Steven Spielberg-directed hit "Hook," which features an adult Peter Pan who lost memory of his past as the magical character. The movie features Dustin Hoffman in the titular role and Robin Williams as the grown-up Peter Pan known as Atty. Peter Banning in the human world.

The movie earned more than $300 million worldwide.
