Philip Seymour Hoffman's Death Rattles Hollywood, Stars React
News of Philip Seymour Hoffman's death is still rocking the entertainment industry as dozens of celebrities sounding off about their grief on Monday.
The actor was found dead in his New York City apartment on Sunday, Feb. 2 after what appeared to be a drug overdose. Hoffman, 46, was outspoken about his history of addiction that started with prescription medication and later turned into heroine, and a syringe was reportedly beside the actor at the time of his death.
Hoffman's family released a statement over the "tragic and sudden loss," and they are receiving widespread support from several of the actors' former co-stars, including Julianne Moore, George Clooney and Tom Hanks, who also released statements of their own.
"I feel so fortunate to have known and worked with the extraordinary Philip Seymour Hoffman, and am deeply saddened by his passing," Moore said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"My thoughts and condolences are with his family," she added. The actress starred in "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia" and "The Big Lebowski" alongside Hoffman.
"This is a horrible day for those who worked with Philip," Hanks said. "He was a giant talent. Our hearts are open for his family."
Clooney noted, "There are no words. It's just terrible," according to EW.
Furthermore, Twitter was immediately flooded with messages of mourning and sorrow following news of the Oscar winner's death, including posts from celebrities such as Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey, Ellen DeGeneres, and many more.
"I'm so shocked, and so sad hearing of Philip Seymour Hoffman's death," Bridges wrote on Twitter.
Spacey posted, "A tragedy to lose as supremely talented an actor as Philip Seymour Hoffman. An unspeakable loss for film, theatre & all who knew him. RIP"
"Just read @guardian Philip Seymour Hoffman… a stunningly gifted actor… shocking and so sad," actress Thandie Newton wrote. "His pain must've been desperate. RIP."
Channing Tatum added, "Unbelievable talent. The creative community has lost a true acting genius. RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman"
"Philip Seymour Hoffman was a brilliant, talented man," Ellen DeGeneres tweeted. "The news this morning is shocking and sad. My heart goes out to his loved ones."
Among the most controversial Twitter post was that of Jared Padalecki who referred to Hoffman's death as "stupid" just hours after the news had broken.
"'Sad' isn't the word I'd use to describe a 46 year old man throwing his life away to drugs," the actor wrote.
The "Supernatural" star's comments were met with fury online, and he later clarified: "I didn't mean PSH is stupid or that addition isn't a reality. I simply meant I have a different definition of 'tragedy.'"
Meanwhile, Hoffman was reportedly just seven days away from finishing filming for his latest project, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2." However, the actor's death will not impact the film's Nov. 21 release date, insiders say.
Hoffman's other forthcoming projects include "A Most Wanted Man" in which he co-stars alongside Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright, as well as the film "God's Pocket" which features Christina Hendricks and Richard Jenkins.
The actor leaves behind his longtime partner, Mimi O'Donnell, and their three children.
