'Pitch Perfect 2' Confirmed, Elizabeth Banks to Direct Sequel
"Pitch Perfect" fans can celebrate a forthcoming sequel of the comedy to be directed by Elizabeth Banks, according to reports on Monday.
The original musical comedy was released in 2012 starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, and actresses are believed to be returning for "Pitch Perfect 2." The film will be Banks' directorial debut.
"Elizabeth originated the idea for 'Pitch Perfect' and was instrumental in making the first film such a huge success," said Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"She brings an enormous amount of energy and experience to everything she works on and we're thrilled she is making her feature directorial debut on 'Pitch Perfect 2,'" Langley added.
Banks also co-starred and produced the original "Pitch Perfect" film. The "Hunger Games" star is also well known her roles in the film "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and on the television series "30 Rock," among others.
Meanwhile, "Pitch Perfect" was an unexpected hit upon its release two years ago, earning over $113 million worldwide, becoming the second highest grossing musical comedy after "School of Rock." The film follows The Barden Bellas, an all-female singing group who is competing to win Nationals when Beca (Wilson) joins. The original film also starred Brittany Snow and Skylar Astin.
On Twitter, "Pitch Perfect" fans are sounding off on their excitement over the upcoming sequel.
"I will be so happy when Pitch Perfect 2 comes out," wrote Evan.
Kennedy added, "What? They're finally making a Pitch Perfect 2 Accca-awesome!"
"I will be very disappointed if Pitch Perfect 2 is not as funny as the original," Becca noted.
However, not all Twitter users are optimistic about the sequel, such as Bob who tweeted, "The first one wasn't even that great. I don't think they should even consider doing another one; vacuous."
