'Planet of the Apes 3' News: Director Matt Reeves Talks About Upcoming Movie

Director Matt Reeves recently talked about his plans for the follow up to "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes."

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" became one of 20th Century Fox's most widely acclaimed blockbusters of the year and it has reportedly grossed over $700 million worldwide. The first film, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," introduced viewers to Caesar, a genetically engineered ape who evolved into a revolutionary leader for all the other apes. The second movie picked up on what happened 10 years after the first film, after the human population was almost wiped out by a virus, and Caesar's sympathies for the remaining humans' plight is challenged by the other apes.

Reeves said that Caesar's journey in the first two films will be carried over in the next film.

"The first one is sort of how he goes from humble beginnings to becoming a revolutionary," Reeves told Coming Soon. "In 'Dawn', he really rose to occasion of becoming a leader in really challenging and difficult times. The notion of what we're after with the third is to sort of continue that trajectory and see how he becomes a seminal figure in ape history."

"He almost becomes sort of an ape Moses. A mythic status … We're trying to play out those themes and continue to sort of explore it in this universe. Exploring human nature under the guise of apes," he added.

Meanwhile, Andy Serkis, who plays Caesar, gave his take on what the third film could be.

"The ape community has fallen apart . There's potential war," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "He's going to have to lead the apes in darker times. I think it's going to be very powerful."

The third "Planet of the Apes" movie, with its official title still to be announced, is slated to premiere on July 29, 2016.
