'PlanetSide 2' News: Massive Online Shooter Coming to PS4 in June
"PlanetSide 2," a massive online first-person shooter for PC is in the record books for having 1,158 gamers participate in one online battle at one time. Most PC games are usually only able to host between 16 to 64 players simultaneously, so "PlanetSide 2's" feat was unprecedented, adding to the popularity of the game.
Good news for PS4 owners: Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment), is bringing the game to the PlayStation 4. After ending a closed beta that has been going on since January, it is set to be released on June 23, according to a report in Tech Times.
The other piece of good news is that the game will be free-to-play. One need not have a PlayStation Plus subscription to download and play. Daybreak is also promising continued support, numerous updates and new content along the way.
"PlanetSide 2" even for the PS4 will continue to be a venue for "immense fights between gamers, featuring soldiers, weaponry and vehicles in matches." Players will be given "different chances at taking on different roles within teams," the report added. The game values player skill and teamwork in terms of overcoming opposing teams or factions. It also features a day and night cycle which affects the way teams plan for attacks.
Combat takes place in the planet Auraxis, where three factions are fighting over control of territory. Each battle can accommodate as many as 2,000 players.
The PS4 version, according to another report in IGN, will feature additional exclusive content different from the PC version. This includes a new battle map called Koltyr. Future updates will also have additional features, events and marketplace items.
The PC version was originally released in November 2012, also as free to play. It is a remake of "PlanetSide" which was released in 2003, which continues to chronicle the efforts of three factions as they fight over domination of the planet Auraxis.
