'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' Getting a Little Help From the 'Sea of Thieves' Team

"PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" is getting a major visual upgrade with the game set to make use of the water tech used in the upcoming game "Sea of Thieves."

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, "PlayerUnknown's Battleground" creator Brendan Greene revealed that he spoke to the folks behind "Sea of Thieves" in a recent Microsoft event, where they said the game is perfect, but the water "is not very good."

But Rare has great water tech. They said, "We should share some knowledge." That's a great thing about being part of a network of studios. We can get that water tech, essentially for free, and we can share stuff with them. That's just invaluable, because their water is great. Having that would really finish off our world nicely.

The partnership was made possible due to the fact that Rare is owned by Microsoft while "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" is currently exclusive to the Xbox One and PC. However, nothing is set in stone yet as no changes have been made thus far.

Speaking of exclusivity, Greene noted that there is no plan to bring the game to the PlayStation 4 at this time because of their "limited" team size at the moment.

We can only focus on PC and Xbox. We just don't have the time, and Xbox has the Preview Program, which allows us to — like Early Access — develop the game with the players. That's where our focus is right now, and we just want to make the best version of the game for both of those platforms.

With regard to possible cross-play, Greene said that they are "looking in to it" and they are interested in bringing such feature in some way, shape or form in "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds."

But we think it would only be fair if it was keyboard and mouse versus keyboard and mouse, or controller versus controller. But it's still under heavy discussion.
