'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' News: Over 1.5 Million Concurrent Users Recorded; Developer Hints at Single-Player Campaign
"PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG)" has crossed 1.5 million concurrent players on Steam, marking another huge milestone for the game since its release in March.
As Gamespot points out, this is a big win for "PUBG" since its latest numbers is just a few hundred thousand more than the free-to-play "DOTA 2's" 1.29 million record during its peak in March of last year. Considering Steam's history, "DOTA 2" and "PUBG" are the only two games to have over 1 million concurrent players during their peak.
Following the game's most recent success, developer Brendan Greene has expressed plans to come up with a single-player campaign for "PUBG."
"I would love to add a single player campaign to the game," Greene said when asked about possible new features for the shooter. However, he also noted that it might be a while before they introduce this new feature since the team is still busy working on the Xbox One port.
Greene added, "I think the island we have could be a great location for an interesting story, but unfortunately we just don't have the time or the resources for this at the moment!"
The next major update for "PUBG" is a yet-to-be-named new map. There is currently one map in the game: Erangel, a fictional island found in the Black Sea. Based on the game's storyline, Soviet forces tested weapons in the area back in the '50s and it is now being used as the setting for the new battles.
In the anticipated map, "PUBG" is moving the action to an abandoned city in the middle of the desert. Bluehole has yet to announce an official release date for the map, though the developer has already been sharing photos of it on the "PUBG" Twitter page.
"PUBG" is scheduled for a full release on PC later this year. While no definitive date has been announced, it's prerelease version is now available on Steam Early Access. An Xbox One version is in the works, but Bluehole has not yet confirmed if it will also debut on PlayStation 4.
Developed by Bluehole, "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" is currently available for PC via Steam.
