PlayStation 4.5 specs leak: Neo to feature CPU, GPU, and RAM upgrades

A new report appears to shed some light on the possible specifications of the rumoured PlayStation 4.5 or PlayStation 4K, codenamed "Neo." Sony will allegedly give Neo upgraded CPU, GPU, and RAM.

Neo will have faster clock speed, faster memory, and improved GPU, "multiple sources" tell GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb. The publication adds that documents they've received note Neo's HDD is the same as the PS4, although it isn't clear if this means the console's capacity or connection speed.

For comparison's sake, the original PS4 used 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz, an AMD GCN 18 CUs at 800 MHz GPU, and an 8 GB GDDR5, 178 GB/s memory while the Neo reportedly has the same CPU clocked at 2.1 GHz, an improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz GPU, and the same memory but at 218 GB/s.

The report goes on to say that starting October, all games will need to support the new Neo. While this doesn't mean the Neo itself will be released in October, it does mean that games shipped within or after this month will have two modes, a "Base Mode" and a "Neo Mode." The latter mode will obviously make the game compatible to the new console, while the former will make it run on the PS4. In addition, the Neo Mode will result in games running at higher resolutions and stable frame rates. It will also support 4K image output, although games won't necessarily have to run at 4K resolution.

Frame rate is one thing that Sony is strict about, according to the report. Developers must meet or exceed the game's PS4 frame rate.

The Neo will not be a replacement for the PS4 but will exist alongside it and use the same user environment. This means the two consoles won't differ in terms of user experiences, online communities, and PSN store. But more than that, it also means there won't be any Neo-only games or exclusive options or unlockables for Neo players. The same goes for peripheral support like VR headset.

Giant Bomb says all of these new information is in line with early reports and rumors like that from Digital Foundry.
