PlayStation VR News: Sony to Release More Headsets April 2017

The selling of the PlayStation VR is off to a good start, as about a million of headsets have reportedly been sold only four months since the product's release.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Global Chief Executive Andrew House recently told the New York Times that they are very close to achieving their internal goal for the sales of the PlayStation VR. According to him, the company's target was to sell one million headsets until mid-April, about six months after the launch. Roughly four months after the release, the Japanese electronics giant is happy to announce that since Feb. 19, they have already sold a total of 915,000 pieces.

House acknowledged that they had doubts on whether virtual reality would be a hit to the mass market. He even revealed that he was one of those people who voted to producing fewer headsets in case consumers would not buy them.

"It's the classic case in any organization — the guys who are on the front end in sales are getting very excited, very hyped up. You have to temper that with other voices inside the company, myself among them, saying let's just be a little bit careful," the executive said.

As it turns out, people, especially in Japan, are lining up outside stores whenever news of a product restock is announced. Based on the current sale, Sony will surely surpass the one million forecast. House revealed that more PlayStation VR headsets would be available in the market by April. They also plan to sell the headsets in Latin America by fall.

Meanwhile, a review from GameSpot reports that although the PlayStation VR may have some issues, it is still impressive compared to the more expensive headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. If there is one area that Sony needs to address in its virtual reality headset, it would be its resolution. The website states that the PlayStation VR's 5.7-inch 1920x1080-resolution stereoscopic 3D screen tends to be blurry.
