'Pokémon GO' Gen 3 Update: Fans Calling for Hoenn Release

"Pokémon GO" fans have just received the Gen 2 update, and already there is growing clamor for the next generation to be released. Niantic will be feeling the pressure on this one as the third generation, set in the Hoenn region, is one of the enduring crowd favorites for the franchise.

Polygon ran a feature on the lighthearted pokes at the game company, which has just released 80 Pokémon very recently, to go ahead and release the third generation right now. While "Pokémon GO" has not yet received even most of the second-generation Pokémon, it's understandable that a lot of fans are already hoping to see some of their favorites from the Hoenn region.

A growing number of posts on social media have been asking Niantic, "Ok now where's gen 3?" The third generation, or "gen 3" as it is usually referred to, spans some of the most popular versions of the series. "Gen 3" covers the previous games "Pokémon Ruby," "Pokémon Sapphire" and "Pokémon Emerald," which were released all the way back from 2002.

A lot of the Pokémon from this generation eventually made it to mainstream, as exemplified by the old but still kicking Mudkips meme. "Cool Pokémon due to come out this week, but we need gen 3. I [heard] you all like Mudkipz!" as mentioned by Benn Banasik on Twitter.

The mere glimpse of a Pokémon from the third installment of the franchise is enough to generate excitement from fans. "@Pokemon I saw azurill does this mean some new Pokémon might be from gen 3?" asks Evan Van Dyk, even though the announcement already said that the new Pokémon released in the latest update would be from Gen 2.

The third iteration of the series still holds much interest that two more remakes have been made for the Hoenn region  "Pokémon Omega Ruby" and "Pokémon Alpha Sapphire." It is unlikely that the third generation will be coming soon, but at least Niantic already knows what people are eagerly waiting for.
