'Pokemon GO' News, Update: Niantic Teases Double XP Event, Asks Players to Save In-Game Candies

Just hours after the Pokemon Day update went live, Niantic teased that another big "Pokemon Go" event is coming up. Rumor has it that it is going to be a new double XP event, based on a pattern that has emerged from previous event rewards.

Niantic teased the new event at the recent DICE Awards, where "Pokemon Go" bagged the Best Mobile Game award. During the event, one member of the mobile game's development team said that fans should save their in-game candies.

On the official Snapchat account of IGN, one "Pokemon Go" developer also asked players to save their candies. His statement, which he ended with a wink and a thumbs-up, sparked speculations that it might have something to do with the upcoming Easter event.

Players speculate that the upcoming event is a double XP event, considering the pattern of past "Pokemon Go" events. One Redditor noted, "Halloween (double candy) Thanksgiving (double xp) Christmas/ New Year (special Santachu + increased Kanto starter spawn rate) Valentine's (double candy) Event (double xp) Easter (special + increased 10 km egg drop rate)?"

There are also speculations that if the next big event happens before Easter, then Niantic will most likely do something for Mother's Day or St. Patrick's Day. According to another Redditor, the St. Patrick's Day event may center on Lucky Eggs. He also suggested that the game developer may launch a consumable item that will grant players a double XP for a limited period of time.

Last Feb. 26, Niantic launched the latest Pokemon Day update. This update will run until 9 p.m. (U.K. time) of March 6. Within the said time period, players will encounter Pickachus in the wild, wearing a festive party hat. "The Pikachu you catch during that time will keep its party hat forever, so be sure to look for this special Pikachu during its short time in the wild," Niantic previously announced.
