'Pokemon's' 20th Anniversary News: Four New Limited Edition Nintendo 2DS Consoles Honor 'Pokemon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow'
With the 20th anniversary of "Pokemon" looming closer, Nintendo, Creatures Inc., and Game Freak Inc. have started to churn out new products to commemorate the event. In addition to the original Pokemon trading card starter pack that will be re-released next year, Nintendo will be launching four limited edition Nintendo 2DS consoles.
Serebii first spotted and broke the news that four special editions of the Nintendo 2DS system will be released in Japan. The handhelds will be in the classic Pokemon colors, each of which will come pre-installed with "Pokemon Red," "Pokemon Green," "Pokemon Blue," or "Pokemon Yellow."
The special edition Nintendo 2DS will have a themed home menu, a region map poster of the game, and stickers, according to IGN.
A code for Mew is an added incentive as well. The code can be used to download the Pokemon for free on "Pokemon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow," "Pokemon X and Y," "Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire." Mew is redeemable until March 31, 2017.
The new consoles are listed on the official website of Pokemon Japan. They are available now for pre-order at 9,980 yen (around $80) and will release on Feb. 27. No information of a release date for the United States or other territories has been provided so far.
The "Pokemon" throwback fever doesn't end with these new consoles, though. As already mentioned, the original starter packs will also be available in Japan on Feb. 27. The deck of 60 Pokemon trading cards are designed to resemble the original cards released 20 years ago. The starter pack will also include a manual and a coin. It will sell for 1,300 yen (about $10.80). As with the special Pokemon-themed Nintendo 2DS consoles, the starter pack has not received any Western release as of this writing.
