'Poldark' Series 3: Fans Will See More of Demelza
Reports have it that fans will see more of Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson) when the show returns. On the other hand, even before series 3 starts, "Poldark's" fourth installment has already been given the green light.
"Poldark" is based on the same title series of historical novels written by Winston Graham that was first published in the 1940s. The franchise got its first TV adaptation in 1975. It is set in the 18th century and its story revolves around Captain Ross Poldark, an army veteran during the American War of Independence.
In March 2015, BBC One rebooted the franchise with another TV series adaptation, this time with Aidan Turner playing the role of Ross.
According to The Telegraph, fans are going to see more of Demelza, Ross' wife, in the show's upcoming series 3. The report noted that the current TV series depiction of her character breaks away from the submissive nature of her version in the novel.
Events from the previous series did not favor Demelza so well after she found out that her husband slept with his former lover, Elizabeth Poldark Warleggan (Heida Reed). However, it looks like Demelza will continue to plot her revenge against her cheating husband, something that the TV producers connected to her "modern" characteristics.
The producers of the BBC One adaptation of "Poldark" explained they view Demelza in a different way from how she was depicted in the books. The same The Telegraph report quoted producer Karen Thrussell explaining, "We have a book written by a man in the 1940s, about people in the 18th century, and now we're looking at it through our eyes. I think that the spirit of Demelza we start off with is feisty."
Thrussell added that their version of Demelza is a woman who speaks her mind despite having opinions that do not conform to what her society prescribes, and it is something that the producer referred to as "a very modern concept."
On the other hand, the fans' well-loved character Jud Paynter (Phil Davis) will unfortunately not be back in series 3. His removal from the narrative is another major breakaway from Graham's novels since Jud was originally written to become a gravedigger and remained in the story.
Though the exact date of its premiere has yet to be announced, BBC One has already confirmed that "Poldark" series 3 will return in June.
