'Power Rangers' reboot release date, cast news: Original soundtrack may not hold appeal
Watching 90s action TV shows, such as the "Power Rangers," has always been appealing mainly because of the fight sequences, visual effects, and of course, the catchy soundtracks. With the announcement of a reboot for the evil-fighting group, many wonder if the movie will still feature the same soundtrack.
Twenty years ago, along with the release of the "Power Rangers: The Movie" was its famous soundtrack that offered catchy songs performed by an impressive lineup. The soundtrack included songs such as Van Halen's "Dream," Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Higher Ground," as well as a reworked techno version of Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting," which was retitled to "Kung Fu Dancing," and of course the popular "Go Go Power Rangers" by the Power Rangers Orchestra, comprising Eric Martin of Mr. Big, studio musician Tim Pierce, John Pierce of "Pablo Cruise," singer-pianist Kim Bullard, and Matt Sorum of "Guns N' Roses" and "Velvet Revolver." The impressive lineup had definitely rendered the songs catchier with new lyrics and longer guitar solos; however, with the show's theme, there isn't much they could really improve on.
Crave recently did a review of the 20-year-old soundtrack and tackled the issue of whether the soundtrack will still be appropriate today. It is said that although most songs have definitely lost their luster over time, some points were important to take note of, such as the theme song. Although quite silly, the simple and easy-to-remember tune still have viewers humming to it.
Most superhero movies today cater to an older demographic, thus the reboot movie should definitely consider updating its soundtrack, without sacrificing the vibe of the original soundtrack. Also, songs that were intendedly used during the fight scenes should be toned down, as most people looking forward to superhero movies nowadays may find scenes with overbearing background songs as cliché.
For now, the movie is under development so it's safe to assume that the soundtrack is far from the studio's mind. Fans, however, are already looking forward to the movie that is expected to hit theaters in 2017.
