'Power Rangers' the Movie News: Director Says It's a Coming of Age Film
Even though the release of "Power Rangers" movie is not expected until next year, details about the upcoming film have already been released.
There has been a lot of anticipation regarding the upcoming release of the movie adaptation of the classis series "Power Rangers." It was previously announced that Lionsgate will be bringing the young group of heroes to the big screen.
The five Power Rangers, Trini, Billy, Kimberly, Zack, and Jason, will be portrayed by Becky G, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, and Dacre Montgomery, respectively. The director of the film, Dean Israelite, recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how the upcoming film will represent these characters. Israelite explained that they plan to take a modern approach, which will put a lot of focus on diversity.
He said, "From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process. We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters."
In addition, he explained that they aim to reflect the lives of teenagers today. With that, fans can expect "Power Rangers" to be a coming of age story.
Along with the iconic characters, the movie will feature Elizabeth Banks as the villain of the film. She will take on the role of Rita Repulsa, who will be a quirky villain. Israelite also shared his excitement regarding her involvement.
He said, "It's very exciting that we got [Banks], and I think what she loves is the opportunity to really embrace the insanity and deliciousness of Rita Repulsa in terms of how weird and wonderful that character was, and really dive into and consume that character."
"Power Rangers" the movie is expected to hit theaters on Mar. 24, 2017.
