Prince Andrew in Daredevil Challenge: Abseils Down West Europe's Tallest Building
Prince Andrew has showed off his daredevil side after completing a charity abseil down west Europe's tallest building.
The royal abseiled down "The Shard" building in central London to help support educational charity "The Outward Bound Trust" and the "Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund." He was joined in the 250 meter descent by Ffion Hague, wife of British Foreign Secretary William Haugue, and 38 other participants in the charity effort.
The 250 meter abseil was from the summit of the building on the 87th floor down to the 20th floor, and 20 of the group undertook that challenge. The other 18 members of the group descended from the 87th floor down to the 78th floor.
Prince Andrew told reporters: "The charity is close to my heart given my time in the Navy. It's about getting young people to face challenges."
He joked that the most difficult part of the challenge was walking up to the top of the huge building. He said as he did so it dawned on him what he had signed up for.
But he admitted that he enjoyed the daredevil trip although he was scared when he had to make the initial step over the edge as he began the abseil.
Ffion Hague added that she was very happy that she had participated but was equally as glad that it was now all over. She said that she "wouldn't necessarily want to do it again, but it was exhilarating."
