Prince Harry Cold Chamber Session: Prep For South Pole
Prince Harry is preparing for a trip to the South Pole by spending 24 hours in a cold chamber later this month.
A passionate advocate for wounded soldiers; Harry is headed to the southernmost part of the planet in order to participate in a charity event, Walking With the Wounded.
"These men and women have given their all in the cause of freedom, in our cause," Harry explained back in April at an event for Walking With the Wounded, according to Sky News.
"That they should once again step into that breach- this time facing down extreme physical and mental challenges of trekking to the South Pole- just underlines their remarkable qualities," he added.
The 28-year-old member of the British royal family must prepare for the frigid temperatures during a practice session from September 16 to the 17th in what is known as a cold chamber.
Harry and his team will endure simulated blizzard conditions within the chamber where they will practice their daily routine of assembling and dissembling their tent, cooking, and exercising.
Then, in November, Harry and his team will begin the race to the South Pole, which is expected to take 21 days. Members of each team will spend 12 hours skiing, with a 10-minute rest break every two hours, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Harry and his team will be making the 208-mile trek from the 87 degrees latitude line to the South Pole, all the while racing against a team from the U.S. as well as a team comprised of Canadians and Australians.
This year is not the first time Harry has participated in a Walking with the Wounded event. In 2011, the royal was a part of the walk to the North Pole, and last year, he was a Patron of their 2012 Everest Expedition.
A member of the British Army, Harry was granted special leave in order to participate in this year's walk- similar to other members of the team who are currently serving the Army.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry's love life also often makes headlines. The royal is currently linked to 24-year-old Cressida Bonas, whom he was first spotted with at the premiere of "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" in July of 2012.
