Prince William and Kate Middleton to Make Humanitarian Mission
St. James’ Palace has announced that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s next public engagement will be a visit to UNICEF. The royal couple will visit UNICEF’s supply center in Denmark to view the effort to distribute food and medical supplies to East Africa.
The pair will visit the charity’s center in Copenhagen on Nov. 2 with the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark.
Over 13 million people in East Africa are suffering from lack of food. The visit is hoping to attract global attention to the growing crisis in the Horn of Africa. 320,000 children in East Africa are at risk of death due to severe malnutrition.
“The Duke and Duchess have been deeply moved over the past few weeks by the desperate plight of hundreds of thousands of seriously ill children in East Africa, a part of the world they know well and which is dear to them,” said a spokesman for St. James’s Palace.
“Going to Copenhagen to view the supplies heading out to the famine zones was their idea as they are very troubled by the situation.
“The British public has already been very generous, but the royal couple wish to do what they can to help to help maintain global attention on the worsening situation.”
Supplies being sent to East Africa from UNICEF include nutritional treatments for malnourished children, supplementary foods for their families, vaccines, water and emergency medical kits.
“Right now, Unicef, along with many other partners, is working tirelessly to ensure that children’s lives can be saved across East Africa,” said Elhadj As Sy, the charity’s regional chief of Eastern and Southern Africa. “Every day children are being given food and water thanks to the huge generosity of the public all around the world. But, there is so much more to be done. As we speak, more than 320,000 children are in grave danger and need life-saving emergency supplies, like those being shipped and airlifted from our warehouse.”
