Priorities
Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (v. Matthew 6:33, niv)
A good spouse, healthy children, and a nice house are important parts of a typical young American's dreams. Many such dreams also include a meaningful career or other things and experiences, but I'm thinking especially of that very powerful hope for a home and family. Thankfully, I know many young people who willingly risk never achieving that particular dream, not because they don't want it, but because they have something more important in mind. They are committed at an early age to obey Christ, making service for God's kingdom their priority.
As their friends are settling into careers and marriages here, these young adults are preparing themselves for cross-cultural service. Some are married, but many are single. Adding "called to mission service in Kyrgyzstan" to the qualifications for a potential mate greatly reduces the number of prospects! While this may occasionally give them pause, they don't dwell on it. They gladly make their dreams subservient to the kingdom, and trust God to add to their life whatever he pleases, as they put him first.
Those who stay at home, marry, have children, etc., can certainly be in God's will, but Jesus does challenge all of us to put even our fondest dreams under his control.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me seek you and your kingdom first. Amen.
