Pro-Family Groups Combine Resources for Non-Partisan Voter Registration Drive
Six organizations known for their pro-family and pro-life work are joining forces this fall in a combined and coordinated non-partisan voter registration drive designed to increase voter turnout for November. The joint program will be called Commit 2 Vote 2012.
The program was announced by Focus on the Family on Thursday. The five other groups include the Family Research Council, Americans United for Life, American Principles Project, the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund and the Susan B. Anthony List Education Fund.
"On average, more than two families every minute do something tangible to transform the culture through the resources and encouragement offered by Focus on the Family," said Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family. "Our hope through the Commit 2 Vote 2012 campaign is that families will use the resources we provide to make their voices heard on issues that affect the strength and health of the family – as well as the direction of our country."
The coalition's objective is to mail 10 million voter registration forms to approximately 5 million households who are affiliated with one or more of the six groups. Before the registration packet arrives in the mail, each household will receive a phone call alerting them the package will arrive. Additionally, a post card will serve as a reminder to complete the forms.
Voter registration drives are common each election cycle and a number of groups such as the Faith and Freedom Coalition and Concerned Women for America are trying to register a significant number of pro-family voters who have not been registered in a number of years.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as many as 29 percent (60 million) of all citizens were not registered to vote in 2008 and more than one-third of all citizens who were eligible to vote did not cast a ballot in the last presidential election.
"As Christ representatives on earth, Christians have a mandate to be the 'salt and light' of our culture," read a statement on the coalition's website. "Since this is a presidential election year, we have the opportunity to positively impact the direction of our country, the men and women who lead it, and the policies they enact."
Tom McClusky, senior vice president of Family Research Council Action, reinforced the importance of mobilizing Christians to vote, regardless of their political affiliation.
"We have partnered with our friends both in the states and nationally to register unregistered Christians to vote," McClusky told The Christian Post in a written statement. "For we understand that this election is the 'Chick Fil A election,' where people with shared beliefs say 'enough is enough' and help shape this great country into an even better one."
