Pro-Life Campaign to Sweep College Campuses

WASHINGTON – A pro-life college organization is bringing the abortion debate on college campuses across the nation this fall through a series of recruitment programs.

Students for Life of America (SFLA) plans to start 100 campus pro-life groups in the coming semesters, which will bring the national total of college pro-life groups to 300.

“This is a major development within the pro-life movement,” said Danielle Huntley, the organization’s student president in a statement released on Thursday. “This is the first time that a pro-life group will focus all of its energies on mobilizing the college pro-life grassroots.”

SFLA was founded in 1987 by a handful of students at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and is the only national pro-life organization that focuses solely on college students.

The pro-life group plans to recruit five full-time field representatives per semester to help encourage and organize pro-life students, including identifying and training the next generation of pro-life activists.

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, 56 percent of women who have abortions are in their 20’s.

“We are extremely excited to bring our resources to students across the country,” said Huntley. “Students light up when we give them the tools to create and sustain effective pro-life groups on their campuses.”

There are about 3,500 colleges and universities nation-wide and there are currently 200 pro-life groups.
