Pro-lifers react to Trump's reported support for 16-week abortion ban; campaign claims 'fake news'

The national pro-life advocacy organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, which has supported a 15-week national abortion ban, praised Trump in a statement last Friday.

According to a Charlotte Lozier Institute fact sheet cited by SBA Pro-Life America, unborn babies can feel pain by 15 weeks gestation or possibly as early as 12 weeks.

SBA Pro-Life America supports what it describes as a "national minimum standard" for abortion, with exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother. 

"We strongly agree with President Trump on protecting babies from abortion violence at 16 weeks when they feel pain," SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said. "A majority of Americans support this compassionate position." 

The pro-life leader cited a compilation of various studies, which found that nearly 80% of Americans reject abortion on demand, and 67% want abortion limited to the first three months of pregnancy. One of the polls also reported that nearly seven in 10 GOP primary voters support protecting preborn children once they can feel pain by 15 weeks. 

Last year, Dannenfelser criticized a statement from the Trump campaign saying that the potential GOP nominee believes that the three justices he nominated to the Supreme Court "got it right" when they ruled that states should make decisions about abortion. SBA Pro-Life America declared that this position was "unacceptable."

Dannenfelser, who has repeatedly urged pro-life candidates to make their position on abortion clear if they want to win elections, declared that her organization would "oppose any presidential candidate who refuses to embrace at a minimum a 15-week national standard to stop painful late-term abortions while allowing states to enact further protections."
