Project Morpheus release date news: Sony ready to launch VR headset in 2016?
Sony has stayed largely mum on the exact release date of its PS4 virtual reality (VR) headset Project Morpheus, but there are reports that the firm may be ready to launch it in 2016.
So far, Sony has not given an exact date of the release for Project Morpheus, but it has only said that the device will be launched in the first half of 2016. An engineer in charge of the project revealed that they are still waiting to finalize the software of the PS4 VR headset, according to Franchise Herald.
Dennis Castleman, a hardware R&D engineer for Sony, put up a Facebook post about how ready the company is to enter the production phase for Project Morpheus. He said he has been on the project for three years and confirmed that it will be released to the market next year.
"In our case, the HMD [head-mounted display] hardware is ready to go," said Castleman. "We're just waiting for the game titles to catch up with the hardware."
Alphr offers fans a bit of a preview into Project Morpheus. The VR headset is powered by the PlayStation 4 and will also make use of the present PlayStation Move controllers, the report states.
The Japanese device maker wants to make sure that the software will be very compelling to make as much impact as possible when it finally launches Project Morpheus. Sony chief Shuhei Yoshida previously emphasized the importance of indie developers to the game industry, the report details.
Yoshida said it is still "too early" to talk about the estimated price of Project Morpheus. For now, Sony is waiting for the perfect time to launch the device when its lineup of killer apps is already complete.
