Promise Keepers (PK), the international ministry to men, is partnering with New Directions International to produce a series of prayer events and men's meetings in Haiti. "Haiti at the Cross," a spiritual enrichment conference for the men of Haiti, will be held December 9 - 12, 2004, in conjunction with the Caribbean nation's Bicentennial celebrations.

"God is doing a great work in Haiti," said Dr. J.L. Williams, founder and CEO of New Directions International (NDI), based in Burlington, N.C. "To change a nation you have to change the men. We want Promise Keepers to help change the men of Haiti--especially those with influence and in the business community."

New Directions International, a global missions organization specializing in connecting the American church and individuals with strategic leaders overseas, has ministered in Haiti and other economically depressed countries for more than 35 years.

According to NDI, the evangelical church, by some estimates, now makes up 45 - 50% of Christians in Haiti.

“Despite the stressful economic and political situation in Haiti, there are signs of hope,” NDI reported.

Promise Keepers and NDI, which both share a desire to encourage believers to be "salt and light," say faithful Christians can act as a catalyst for positive change in a country infamous for its standing as the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and its adherence to voodoo religion.

In regards to the six-day meeting, Promise Keepers president and CEO Dr. Tom Fortson said, "It's all about seeing men transformed worldwide."

"Promise Keepers gets calls every month from various parts of the world as people become aware of the impact of truly Christian men on their societies,” Fortson added. “It is an honor to work with New Directions International and Haiti's Christian leaders on this historic event."

Fortson will speak at a National Prayer Convocation on Thursday, December 9 at the Haitian White House.

The men's conference, which will be held at the National Stadium Friday through Sunday, also features former major league pitcher Dave Dravecky, Bishop Larry Jackson (Charlotte, N.C.), and Missouri camp director Joe White.

Additional events include Bicentennial Liberation Festivals in 12 to 15 cities around Haiti (Dec. 4-7), and Choir Day at the National Stadium on Sunday morning (Dec. 12).

Conference schedule and locations, and travel information are available at the New Directions International website: www.newdirections.org.
