Promise Keepers to Rock Long Island NY Tonight

Tonight, the popular conference for men, Promise Keepers, is returning to New York after six years, and organizers are excited to present to New Yorkers their new format.

NEW YORK – Tonight, Promise Keepers is returning to New York after six years, and organizers are excited to present to New Yorkers their new format.

In the early 90s, tens of thousands of men filled football stadiums across the United States at any given Promise Keepers’ conference, hoping to become better husbands, fathers and Christians. By decade's end, PK had only a fraction of the following. Greatly changed since then, PK presents the same message with high-energy, “octane-fueled” media presentations, comedic drama, and dramatic worship music.

Promise Keepers looks more like a wrestling arena than a Christian conference, and PK believes this is exactly what men need.

"I think many men perceive the Church as feminine. It's not a real place men go to be men - where masculinity can be expressed," said President of PK, Tom Fortson. "One of the secrets of PK is that a man can worship freely in a masculine context with other men.

Believing its message is just as relevant now as it was 15 years ago, PK will conduct 20 events around the country this year. Its mid-season stop is Long Island, N.Y., Sept. 16-17 at Nassau Coliseum.

The 2005 “Awakening” runs Friday night from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is based upon the verse from Romans 13:11: “And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now that when we first believed.”

Fortson said, “The whole idea in the Awakening is that there is this epic battle for a man's heart, and he needs to be alert and sober to what's going on around him." The Awakening brings men to realize their full potential at home, work, and in the community.

The Long Island event includes: Vietnam Veteran and motivational speaker Dave Roever; popular youth speaker Reggie Dabbs; national youth speaker Phil Chapin; pastor and author Dale Bronner; founding PK Board Member and President of TruthWorks Ministries James Ryle; men’s ministry leader Steve Farrar; international evangelist Jose Zayas; and regional director for Jews for Jesus Jhan Moskowitz.

Salvador, a fast-paced Christian rock group, opens the event with a special concert. The non-apologetic and politically incorrect comedian Brad Stine (MTV, Showtime, A&E) appears Saturday, and the L.A. drama troupe “Awaken” will perform throughout.

The all new PK7 worship band, made up of worship leaders and studio musicians assembled by Integrity Music, debuts this year at all Promise Keepers conferences.

Spokesperson Steve Chavis said the event is to shake up some men.

"It's to get the cobwebs out of their brain with a room full of guys who are also pursuing truth, excellence, and beauty."

Adult registration is $89.00; youth registration (18 and under) is $69.00. Group discounts are available. Sign up on line at www.promisekeepers.org, or by calling 1-800-888-7595.
