PS4 Availability Limited: 'Struggling to Keep Up with Demand' Until Summer, Sony Executive Admits
A new reports are indicating Sony will not be able to meet console demands for the PS4 until the summer begins.
Sony division head Andrew House touted PS4's impressive sales, but with that great total comes the chance of consoles not being available. "We're struggling to keep up with demand," House said to Screw Attack. "Conservatively, as we get into the early summer months, we'll be closer to a full supply situation."
The Wall Street Journal reported that PS4s are being sold as quick as they come in at retailers such as GameStop.
A few weeks ago, Sony admitted their availability would be going down even further because of the release of the console to other regions.
"I can't work [the math] out precisely," said PlayStation U.K. executive Fergal Gara according to the Christian Post. "But based on what I've seen so far, I think it is going to be [hard to find a console] until around about April. You might get a fortnight or a week here or there where it is more available, but we should be back to free supply by about April. ... That's our best guess. It might be a little earlier than that, or it might be a little later, but we'll get there."
Sony also recently announced the console reached their goal of selling over 5 million units by the end of the fiscal year, and are already over 6 million. These great sales numbers were in spite of the console not being available in Japan until last month.
"The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said in a released statement. "I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."
