PS4 Release Date: System to Stream Original Channels
The next generation PlayStation console is rumored to be launching within the next two years and Sony is reportedly planning to launch its own Web-based streaming service that might appear on the system, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
“Sony is proposing to beam the channels over Internet connections to Sony-made devices, including PlayStation gaming consoles, TV sets and Blu-ray players,” said the report.
PlayStation consoles are a common staple in the homes of many around the world.

“Sony has sold about 18.1 million Playstation 3 consoles in the U.S. alone, according to NPD Group Inc., and many homes have other Internet connected Sony devices,” the report added.
If Sony accomplishes creating this service, the company can “skirt around cable companies” control of the market, according to technology website MacRumors.
The PlayStation maker reached out to a number of content providers, including Comcast, NBCUniversal, Discovery, and News Corp.
Sony hopes to secure deals with these content providers to begin streaming their material over its upcoming service.
However, the company can run into some difficulties with this strategy.
“One stumbling block could be Sony’s desire to license a smaller bundle of channels than existing cable operators offer to undercut the incumbents on price and flexibility,” the report added. “That could be a nonstarter for media companies, which would prefer not to undercut their biggest customers.”
Apple attempted to create a similar service several years ago, but failed to reach an agreement with the content providers making the tech giant shift its strategy.
Apple plans to launch a Siri-enabled television set in late 2012 or early 2013.
It is not clear what content Apple will attempt to pursue at this time for its own upcoming streaming system.
