PS4 Software Update Now Available, Improves DVD Playback and More
A PS4 software update is now available that makes various improvements to the console.
It is known as Firmware 1.61 and users will be prompted to download the software as soon as they sign onto the PlayStation Network. It brings improvements to DVD playback picture quality, supports various wireless stereo headsets, allows for the muting of the PlayStation Camera's microphone and improves software stability overall.
Sony recently achieved its goal for selling over 5 million units before the end of its fiscal year, which takes place on March 31, 2014, according to the company. The console has moved around 5.3 million units altogether and is currently out selling the Microsoft's Xbox One in a two-to-one ratio.
This is also a major feat for Sony as the company was able to reach its goal before the PS4's official launch in Japan which will be on Feb. 22. This will bring the console even more ahead of the Xbox One.
The PS4 has a significant advantage over the Xbox as it is $100 cheaper at $399 for the base model.
Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 in February of last year. The new system is powered by an eight-core X86 AMD "Jaguar" CPU and a 1.84 Teraflop AMD Radeon graphics engine. It also has 8GB of GDDR5 memory and will use a hard drive for storage instead of SSD.
Like the PS3, the PS4 has a Blu-ray drive that can also play DVDs and is backwards compatible with PS3 games, and eventually will be able to play PS and PS2 titles, according to Sony.
The console also features a new exterior design, a controller with a small touch pad, and a small list of games which is sure to grow in the coming years. Despite the lack of hot titles, customers still feel the need to get their hands on the console based on these new statistics.
