Pseudomonas Infection Signs, Symptoms, Treatment: Prince George's Hospital Center MD Rush Babies Out of NICU After Finding Potentially Deadly Bacteria
Three Babies Found To Be Positive with Pseudomonas Bacteria
Babies were rushed out of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Prince George's Hospital Center in Maryland after three babies were found to be positive with Pseudomonas bacteria.
When the Pseudomonas infection was confirmed, a total of nine babies were transferred out of the NICU right away. This included the three babies with the potentially deadly bacteria who were found to be "asymptomatic" for any infection and were not exhibiting signs and symptoms.
Two infant deaths in the NICU
There were two babies that recently died in the hospital's NICU but Chief Medical Officer Dr. Carnell Cooper denied that the deaths were connected to the Pseudomonas bacteria, NBC Washington reported. He adds that babies in the NICU suffer from various conditions. The deaths of the two infants in the NICU are currently being looked into.
There are no details on when the Pseudomonas bacteria was detected.
Prince George's Hospital Center Pseudomonas Infection Investigation
The hospital has shut down their NICU unit last Thursday to make way for an investigation. The tap water was also cut off in the vicinity. The Washington Post wrote that hospital officials have hired a third party company to investigate the water sources for the root of the Pseudomonas bacteria. It is not known if the NICU has their own water filtration system for its patients.
Infection Prevention expert Joan Hebden has stated that the strain of the bacteria is not antibiotic-resistant. There are no issues with the water in the hospital but the medical facility will opt to test and decontaminate it again in the next few days.
Pseudomonas Infection Signs, Symptoms, Treatment
A Pseudomonas infection is a potentially deadly condition that is caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common type of bacteria. According to WebMD, this bacterium is everywhere but do not regularly cause major health complications for healthy people. However, for people with compromised immune systems or are sick, a Pseudomonas infection can be potentially deadly.
The signs of symptoms of this condition are dependent on where it is located. People can get Pseudomonas infections in the bone, urinary track, skin and even eyes. Some signs and symptoms include chills, fever, and tiredness.
Treatment for Pseudomonas infections can be tricky as it can be resistant to antibiotics. The best way is to get to the doctor and follow the doctor's prescriptions.
