Puppies in Suitcase Now in 'Witness Protection,' Says Humane Society
Six puppies abandoned in a suitcase are receiving the best care possible from the Humane Society and are in "witness protection" until they are ready to be adopted. Howard Davis of Ohio has been charged with a second-degree misdemeanor after leaving the puppies in a suitcase in an alley.
According to Reuters, the puppies were discovered after their mother was found pacing around the suitcase left in an alley. A passerby opened the suitcase and discovered six bulldog-mix puppies. Police were summoned, and the puppies taken to the local Humane Society.
"It's unfortunate he chose to abandon the dogs," John Dinon, Humane Society executive director told the Associated Press. "If he had just called us and said he couldn't care for them, we would have taken them and he wouldn't have been charged with a crime."

Now Davis faces a fine of $750 and 90 days in jail. Davis blamed the incident on a friend, telling authorities that he his suitcase had been stolen and he had given the dogs to a friend. Yet authorities are skeptical and wondering how the puppies came to be in a stolen suitcase.
For now, the puppies, which are four weeks old, are too young to be taken from their mother. They will remain in the custody of the Humane Society until they are weaned.
"As far as I'm concerned, they're in witness protection," Dinon told the Huffington Post.
Ever since the puppies' story became public, people have taken a great interest in adopting them. People have even begun camping out outside the Humane Society's offices, though Dinon has refused to release any information about the puppies' whereabouts.
Right now the puppies are also considered "evidence" in the case against Davis, which may also postpone their adoption.
"There are witnesses who said that the female is indeed Mr. Davis' dog and that he had been trying to sell the puppies," Dinon told the Toledo Blade.
