R Kelly Cites 'The Notebook' for Divorce Revelation

Some couples may say that "The Notebook," an adapted movie about an epic love story, brought them closer together, but for R&B singer R. Kelly it was the catalyst that would lead to the end of his marriage.

Kelly recently released his new memoir "Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me," which contains details of the moment Kelly realized he could not save his marriage.

Kelly first met his wife Andrea in 1994 when she auditioned as a backup dancer for him. The couple wed in 1996 and had three children during their 12 year marriage. The pair finalized their very public and messy divorce battle in 2009.

The singer describes that he was sitting in a movie theater watching "The Notebook" and after the film ended it hit him that the state of his marriage was beyond himself to save.

"As the film credits started to roll, I couldn't move. I burst into tears. People walking past me patted me on the back, trying to console me. 'The Notebook' was beautiful, and I was crying because its hero and heroine had died together," Kelly writes in his memoir.

"But I was also crying because I remembered a Valentine's Day … when a helicopter dropped a rainfall of roses … that had come and gone ... My marriage had died. And there was nothing I could do to bring it back."

Another contributing factor that the singer cites was that Andrea was not happy having to put her dance career on hold while she stayed home to care for the couple's children. There were also reports of domestic violence.

In 2005, Andrea filed an emergency protective order to keep Kelly away following her claims of physical abuse. She had the order rescinded a few weeks later. The couple then filed for divorce in 2006.
