Rainbow Doritos: Mike Huckabee Asks Frito-Lay to Stop Supporting LGBT Group
Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has urged Frito-Lay to discontinue Doritos Rainbows, which the PepsiCo brought out last week in partnership with, and to raise money for, the LBGT non-profit group It Gets Better.
Huckabee says the co-founder of the LGBT group, Dan Savage, spews hate against Christians, and reflects badly on Frito-Lay.
"Please tell me that you will publicly disassociate yourself with his hate-filled rhetoric, bigotry toward people of faith, and the violent threats he has issued," Huckabee wrote in a letter to the company, according to Fox News.
The rainbow colored chips were sent last week to people who donated $10 to the Savage's group, which helped raise $100,000, Fox News says.
"I am stunned that a corporation with a long history of making snack food would partner with someone whose vile, vulgar violent and anti-Christian bigotry is well documented," Huckabee wrote.
Doritos also encouraged consumers to support the LGBT community by using the hashtag #BOLDANDBETTER on social media.
Frito-Lay spokeswoman Alexia Allina said in a statement that the limited-time Doritos Rainbows all have been claimed and the program has ended. "Details around the fundraising efforts will be shared in the future at an appropriate time. Important to note, our involvement has just been with the It Gets Better Project. We have not partnered with Dan Savage, and he has not been involved with this initiative."
ABC New quoted a spokesperson for Savage as saying, "The It Gets Better Project is committed to suicide prevention and anti-bullying efforts on behalf of LGBT youth, inspired by a YouTube video created by Dan Savage five years ago this week. Unlike Mr. Huckabee, iconic corporations like Frito-Lay are on the right side of history and we appreciate their support."
One Million Moms director Monica Cole called Doritos Rainbows an "assault on Christian values."
"Frito-Lay has designed 'Dorito Rainbows' chips along with a rainbow colored bag, all for the cause of promoting homosexuality," she said, according to The Daily Beast.
"The rainbow colored chips will be mailed to anyone who gives $10 or more to the LGBT 'It Gets Better Project' youth initiative," Cole added. "The organization was started by the notorious anti-Christian extremist Dan Savage. For years Savage has promoted sexual deviancy and hurled nasty insults at Christians. Not only is Frito-Lay promoting homosexuality among teens, but it is backing the agenda of one of the most anti-Christian bullies in America. Frito-Lay knows very well that by doing so, it is condoning open hatred and animosity towards people of faith, especially Christians."
