Randy Travis Hospitalized, Suffers Stroke, Undergoes Brain Surgery
Country legend Randy Travis suffered a stroke and was hospitalized and having surgery to implant a device in his heart, according to hospital authorities. Travis is in critical condition, but making improvements, hospital publicist Kirt Webster said.
"Mr. Randy Travis is out of surgery and in critical condition," The Heart Hospital posted on its website.
Travis had to undergo surgery to relieve pressure on his brain last night, after suffering a stroke as "a complication of his congestive heart failure."
"We will have updates as they become available," Webster told CNN. "His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support."
Travis has been in the hospital since Sunday, when he was treated for "presumptive cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure," Dr. William Gray added. However, he was later transferred to The Heart Hospital for further treatment.
"We determined together in a joint decision that a higher level of specialized care was appropriate, and therefore we transferred him to The Heart Hospital," Dr. Michael Mack said.
Travis was touring when he fell ill, Webster said. The country singer is a legend with seven Grammys, 10 Academy of Country Music awards and 10 American Music Awards. He is also known for his gospel recordings and faith in God.
"I'm far more at peace with myself, just having come to know more and more of the Word of God, and that assurance that I will spend eternity in heaven," Travis told Christianity Today in 2009. "There were a lot of drugs, alcohol and fighting at such a young age. I didn't know any peace of mind, so I had a lot of growing in that area to do. It's nice to feel that peace of everything, in everything."
In addition to recording music, Travis has starred in Christian shows such as "Touched By An Angel" and movies such as "The Visitation" and "The Wager." Prayers for Travis have poured in from around the world.
