Real Life 'Breaking Bad' Math Professor Arrested in Boston for Distributing Meth
A college professor was charged with distributing crystal meth along with her son, echoing the plot line of the Emmy-winning AMC drama series “Breaking Bad.”
Irina Kristy, a math professor that works at both Boston University and Suffolk University, was accused of running a meth lab with her son, 29-year-old Grigory Genkin.
Kristy, 75, who has taught math for more than 20 years, will be arraigned Dec. 21 on charges of “distribution of meth, conspiracy to violate the drug law and drug violation in a school zone," according to the Boston Globe.
On Nov. 7, a bomb squad removed several materials "believed to be hazardous" from the apartment.
“Kristy continues to teach full time at Boston University, but she was placed on administrative leave at Suffolk University last week,” said The Boston Globe.
“A lecturer in the math department at BU since 1987, Kristy teaches three courses each semester” school spokesperson Colin Riley to The Globe. “Riley said he could not comment further on Kristy’s employment with the school because he said it is a personnel matter.”
According to Hollywood Reporter, her son, Genkin, pleaded guilty to the same charges Nov. 14, the same day a summons was filed against Kristy. Genkin, who turned himself in to authorities, was ordered to be held on $1,000 cash bail. He is due back in court Dec. 20.
“The school zone bit comes from the piece of this scenario that's perfectly Breaking Bad-ish in its just-plausible insanity: The lab/residence is roughly 500 feet from both City Hall and an elementary school,” said J. Paul O’Connor of New York Magazine.
“Breaking Bad” is an AMC drama series set in New Mexico. The story is revolved around the life of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, who is a struggling high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.
White turns to a life of crime, producing and selling methamphetamine with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul, with the aim of securing his family's financial future before he dies.
