Rebecca Black 'Friday' Star Drops Out of School Due to Bullying
Rebecca Black has dropped out of school because of bullying, the singer has told ABC’s News Nightline. The “Friday” star has said that the harassment from her schoolmates was more than she could put up with and instead has decided to be home-schooled.
The bullying towards the popular star was directed at her success in launching her music video for song “Friday.”
In the spring her video of “Friday” went viral after it was posted on YouTube. Black said, “After seeing it go from 4,000 views to 70,000 views in one night, and then waking up and it was at 200,000 views, that was when I realized this is going to be big.”
However, jealous bullies were to make sure that along with the positives came a negative reaction to her success. Some started questioning whether Black could actually sing, and she started receiving harassment at school by some of her classmates.
Black described: “When I walk by they'll start singing 'Friday' in a really nasally voice," she said. "Or, you know, they'll be like, 'Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?”
Not wanting to be surrounded by such negativity as her career was taking off, Black asked her mother whether she could be home-schooled. Her mother agreed.
Mother, Georgina Marquez said, “She certainly did not need that kind of pressure.”
“Friday” has been featured on TV show “Glee”, and Black has also appeared on Katy Perry’s video for “Last Friday Night (TGIF).”
The YouTube sensation is now hitting back at her bullies with second song “My Moment.”
Black has explained how she sends a message to “haters” on the new track. She has said that she has now moved on from the bullying saying, “It doesn’t bother me anymore.”
"My Moment" was released Monday and addresses Black's bullies and critics directly with lyrics, "Were you the one who said that I would be nothing? Well, I'm about to prove you wrong. I'm not the only one who believes in something. My one wish is about to come true."
After just two days on release, "My Moment" had more than 1.6 million views on YouTube.
