'Red Dead Redemption 2' Rumor Roundup: What We Know So Far about the Sequel's Plot, Setting, and Release Date

It's been half a decade since the original "Red Dead Redemption" was launched and fans are clamoring for a sequel. Rumors have a lot to say about "Red Dead Redemption 2," but here are the highlights.

"Red Dead Redemption 2" is certainly in the pipeline

Buzz around "Red Dead Redemption 2" continues, despite the lack of any official announcement. Fans are holding on to a possible hint of the sequel's eventual release from comments made by Take-Two Interactive's CEO Strauss Zelnick in the past.

Speaking at a Cowen and Company analyst conference in 2014, Zelnick declared the "Red Dead Redemption" franchise as a permanent one, putting it in the same category as "Grand Theft Auto," which means it will continue to have new games developed.

"I pretty much know the ones that I can assure you are permanent. It's obvious that GTA is a permanent franchise as long as we keep delivering this incredible quality; it seems quite obvious that Red Dead is a permanent franchise, again with the same caveat, or Borderlands, for example, and NBA and others," Zelnick said.

A more recent hint could be found in a press release from November 2015. In it, Take-Two stated that it is "working on numerous unannounced projects" including offerings from its established franchises.

Title

Last year, Reddit user AnonDN1978, who claims to be an ex-Rockstar employee, leaked out many details about the game. One thing the Redditor mentioned was the sequel's title that is going to be "Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the West."

Characters

The same Redditor revealed John Marston will not be appearing in "Read Dead Redemption 2;" instead, the sequel will have a trio of new characters: Irish, Seth, and a customizable third character who is a gun-for-hire.

Setting

There are many theories floating around about the sequel's setting. According to one theory, "Red Dead Redemption 2" will be set in Japan, although it has been pointed out that this would deviate from the original feel of the first game.

"Read Dead Redemption" was set in the Old West, and many believe it is highly likely that the sequel would expound on this. Specifically, it is speculated that the sequel could expand to East of the United States, which could include Utah, Texas, Dakota, and Louisiana, among others.

Release date

Reddit user AnonDN1978 stated previously that the sequel has been in development for years now and is targeting an early 2016 release. In particular, it has been rumored to be unveiled during the E3 2016 and launched in October.

Nothing is really official at this point, and current information about "Read Dead Redemption 2" is still in the rumor category.

What's certain is that if the sequel does release, fans can expect it to be of high quality as Zelnick has commented on how they are committed to bring out quality titles to the market.
