'Red Sparrow' Release Date, News: Jennifer Lawrence a Seductive Spy in New Trailer

Jennifer Lawrence proves she is the ultimate femme fatale in the latest trailer for "Red Sparrow."

On Thursday, Fox finally unveiled the first footage for its upcoming spy thriller film "Red Sparrow." The trailer opens with Lawrence sporting a seductive red dress and a brunette wig. A man appears to put a mobile phone and money clip on a table, and commands her to take off her dress.

The succeeding scenes show curtains swirling, a man being strangled and Lawrence walking downstairs with a new look. Another shot features the actress donning a black swimsuit while tailing a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) at a public pool. She trades her brunette locks to a short blonde wig, somewhat similar to Charlize Theron's hair in the recently released film "Atomic Blonde."

"When I was in Moscow, I heard about a program of young officers trained to seduce and manipulate," a voice-over explains. "To use their bodies. To use everything. They call them sparrows. That's what she is."

Directed by Francis Lawrence,"Red Sparrow" focuses on Dominika Egorova (Lawrence), a former ballerina-turned-spy. The film is based on a novel written by Jason Matthews.

Gizmodo points out that "Red Sparrow's" new trailer might remind fans of Black Widow because of her background that is similar to Dominika's. The Avenger's femme fatale also has a classical dance background and she has been a part of a covert intelligence operation that turns young women into assassins. It's also worth noting that she has a tense conflict with American espionage operatives.

In addition to Lawrence and Edgerton, the cast lineup also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling. Peter Chernin, Steve Zaillian and Jenno Topping serve as producers, with the screenplay by Justin Haythe.

Initially slated for a Nov. 10 premiere, "Red Sparrow" has been rescheduled to debut on March 2, 2018.
