Kevin Reynolds will direct "Resurrection," a thriller set in the days immediately after Christ's death, the Hollywood Reporter has announced.

Reynolds, who previously directed "Waterworld" and the History Channel miniseries "Hatfield & McCoy's" will tell the story of a Roman centurion who, under orders from Pontius Pilot, must locate Christ's body and investigate alleged rumors of his resurrection.

Along the way, the agnostic centurion interacts with the Apostles and other Biblical characters, causing him to grapple with his own faith, even as he must quell an uprising in Jerusalem.

Producer Patrick Aiello wrote the first draft of the script, though subsequent revisions have been made by Reynolds and Karen Kanszen.

LD Entertainment, which is financially backing the film, has described the movie as having a similar tone to "Gladiator."

Reynolds, who attended Baylor, a Christian university in Texas, has also directed other period action and drama films such as "Tristan & Isolde", "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and "The Count of Monte Christo."
