Griffin attended St. Paul's as a special guest of Pastor Lance Watson and spoke before the congregation who was awestruck to see him on their turf. But they were not completely astonished by his visit as he has been known to publicly speak about his Christian faith dating back to his time at Baylor University, where he gained national media attention for his unparalleled speed on the field and his life as a Christian.

"I've been in the church since I was 7," said Griffin, to Baylor Magazine. "My parents didn't push it on us but they made sure we grew up in the church, so that's all we know, that's what we do."

After he was drafted into the NFL in 2012, he continued to display his faith unabashedly and also immediately earned recognition for "making the Redskins relevant again," according to USA Today. Although he is open about his Christian beliefs, he usually does not discuss controversial issues.  But in a recent interview with GQ magazine he discussed the topic of homosexual players in the league. Griffin revealed his stance on the hot social and political issue and gave his opinion on the gay lifestyle.

"Yeah, man. I think there are gay players right now, and if they're looking for a window to just come out, I mean, now is the window. My view on it is, yes, I am a Christian, but to each his own. You do what you want to do. If some Christians want to look at being gay as a sin, then thinking about other women, committing adultery – or any of those other sins that are in the Bible – those are sins, too. And God looks at all of us the same way," said Griffin to GQ, as reported by CBS New York.

He has been dubbed as the "black Jesus" by teammate Fred Davis last season for breaking the Redskin's losing streak in a victory over the Minnesota Vikings, but currently, Griffin in the process of recovering from a knee injury and will not play in the preseason, until his doctor and coach deem him ready to get back on the field.

"Coach has been saying if things go great these next couple days and next week, then maybe," said Griffin, according to nfl.com. "But it's a hard no right now. It's my job to make it a soft no and possibly a yes."
