'Rick and Morty' Season 3: 'Gravity Falls' Easter Eggs and More in the Premiere
The long-awaited comeback of everyone's favorite grandfather and grandson duo in "Rick and Morty" season 3 has come and gone with the rest of the episodes not arriving until summer.
Adult Swim is giving fans plenty of time to rewatch the premiere, which will be perfect opportunities for fans to catch the Easter eggs peppered on the episode.
One of the many things fans love about "Rick and Morty" and what adds to its rewatchability is the nods to pop culture and references that help fans further understand the series.
The "Rick and Morty" season 3 premiere, "The Rickshank Redemption," was a testament to that. Its title alone is a play of the 1994 drama film, "The Shawshank Redemption."
Since the first episode was meant to address Rick's situation in prison, the reference makes sense as the film was about a man who was imprisoned for murders he knows he did not commit.
"The Shawshank Redemption" was also loaded with references to remarks and clarifications to events that took place in the previous seasons.
For starters, Mr. Poopybutthole's statement in the season 2 finale about waiting for a year and a half holds true for the timing of the release of the "Rick and Morty" season 3 premiere. The episode was released on April Fool's Day, which is exactly 18 months after the character told viewers that warning.
The first episode was also chockfull of "Gravity Falls" references. In Rick's attempt to escape the Council of Ricks, he opened a portal, where a coffee mug, notepad and pen — the very items that Grunkle Stan lost in a portal in the Disney Channel series — came out.
At the Citadel of Ricks, Morty appears to be holding one of the journals from the series. The clincher is the appearance of two Mortys that resembled Dipper and Mabel Pines.
The "Rick and Morty" season 3 premiere also addressed the storyline about the fact that the Rick and Morty that fans have been following were residents of Earth C-137.
The episode saw Morty and Summer travel to that dimension where the former showed the latter just how uncaring Rick is about Summer, Jerry and Beth simply because they were not his real family.
One heartbreaking Easter egg in the "Rick and Morty" season 3 has to do with the meaning of getting ice cream to Rick. In a fake memory, it was shown that he lost his wife just before they were about to get ice cream.
Fans will remember that in the season 2 finale, he said he was going to get ice cream. In reality, he meant that he is leaving and is not coming back.
"Rick and Morty" season 3 will be back with more episodes late summer.
