Rihanna's Stylist Opens Up About AMA Hair 'Doobie Wrap'

Rihanna shocked some with her AMA awards hair style, which has become known by many as the "doobie wrap," but now the singer's hair stylist is opening up about why the Barbadian pop star appeared with the overtly casual hairdo.

While a number of ethnic women wear their hair in a doobie to maintain a straight hairstyle, few do so publicly and even less in a formal setting. However, Rihanna's hairstylist Ursula Stephen told Elle magazine about the singer's decision to do so.

"It was actually Rihanna's idea. She had her mind made up," Stephen told Elle. "Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it."

Stephen defended Rihanna's decision to break the mold in the name of fashion.

"It was a nod to fashion," Stephen exclaimed to Elle. "This is a style that can be worn by some of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood."

While many believe that the wrap should not be worn outside of the bedroom, Stephen insisted that it could be a sophisticated style.

"Everyone has an opinion. However, the doobie has been worn to Bergdorf Goodman. They just haven't been paying attention," she told Elle. "And it's been around since the '30s. Part of my job is to know eras, trends and fashion, and to keep looks alive by adding a modern twist."

However, Rihanna does not seem to mind other people's opinions and spoke about God preparing her for them after she got teased in school as a child.

"I got teased my entire school life. What they were picking on I don't even understand," she revealed to Glamour magazine earlier this year. "But I'm not victimized-I'm grateful. I think those experiences were strategically put together by God for the preparation of being in the music industry. It's so easy for me to deal with the (expletive) now."
