Robin Roberts Talks Michael Strahan's New Gig and Josh Elliott's Departure
Robin Roberts revealed that she is "excited" that Michael Strahan is joining "Good Morning America," but feels "beyond sad" that Josh Elliott is leaving the morning show.
Last week, news broke that Elliott was leaving "GMA" in order to join "NBC Sports." Shortly thereafter, Strahan confirmed that he would appear on "GMA" about twice a week, but will keep his job at "Kelly and Michael live!" The news shook fans, but Roberts had only positive things to say about the changes while speaking to Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, April 3.
"I had serious fun with Josh Elliott," the longtime "GMA" host explained. "He's multi-talented, multi-faceted, but we all know of course he's a sports guy. I'm going to miss talking to him on the show and anybody that watched the program would see how he would just light up."
Roberts pointed to Elliott's statement in which he expressed "NBC Sports" was his dream job and recalled previous "GMA" hosts who have departed over the years.
"I am beyond sad that he's leaving us but I was [there] when Diane Sawyer, when Charlie Gibson, when Chris Cuomo, when Sam Champion [left] and we all remain very good friends," Roberts said, according to ET. "I'm so proud of him and happy for him that he's pursuing his heart."
The "GMA" mainstay went onto reveal that the morning show will air a "best of" video segment on Elliott, but that he would not be returning to the show for a farewell. As for Strahan's biweekly appearances on "GMA," Roberts explained it had been "in the works" for a while.
"When he came in when I was on hiatus … for six months he came in a few times and we fell in love with him," she said. "I have had the pleasure of filling in for Kelly Ripa and sitting next to him. He is great and [I'm] so excited about the addition of [Strahan]."
