Next on tap for him was Steve Darcis and the 2nd seed also moved past the second round in straight sets.

The challenges were greater as Philipp Kohlschreiber seemed like a real threat to Federer but the Swiss took everything in stride and still took the match in consecutive sets.

In the fourth round, John Isner stretched Federer as much as he could. He challenged the five-time US Open champion from the first set as they went to the tie-breaker.

Despite losing that first set, Isner continued the pressure in the second set which again went to a tie-breaker which Federer eventually won 8-6 to take a 2-0 lead.

Federer wrapped things up in the third in another hard-fought match to book his place in the quarters – amazingly winning all of his matches so far in straight sets.

On the other hand, Gasquet was tested right away in the first round as he needed five sets to eliminate Thanasi Kokkinakis.

In the second, Robin Haase only won the first set before Gasquet recovered and won the last three to move on in the competition.

Against Bernard Tomic in the third round, Gasquet took him out in straight sets to set up his clash against 6th-seeded Tomas Berdych.

Despite being the underdog, Gasquet remained calm and eventually beat the Czech star in four sets.

With a place in the semis up for grabs, Federer holds an advantage over Gasquet in their head-to-head battle as the Swiss has won 14 of their 16 total meetings.
