Ross Geller Graffiti Sprayed on David Schwimmer's Mansion; NYC Neighbors Upset Over New Townhouse
Ross Geller graffiti was sprayed near actor David Schwimmer's home Monday mocking his time on "Friends" and his notoriously dorky character, paleontologist Ross Geller. "Ross is not cool" along with an arrow was written in white pointing to his soon-to-be-completed six-floor town house in the East Village of New York City.
The Ross Geller graffiti came after the 46-year-old actor bought and demolished a five-story townhouse on East Sixth Street. The original residence, built in 1852 and described as "one of the finest homes in the East Village" by blog evgrieve.com, was close to becoming a historical landmark. However, Schwimmer purchased the place for $4.1 million in 2010, knocking it down to build his 9,000-square-foot mansion in its place.
The move has not gone over well with some residents of the neighborhood, who have protested Schwimmer's construction as "underhanded," according to The New York Post.
"The destruction of an irreplaceable historic building for what???" one irate neighbor wrote on sign near the construction site. "F--- you + your ugliness."
"It's really giving the middle finger to the neighborhood," Pete, who lives nearby, told The Post.
However, not everyone is upset at the millionaire actor for building his home to his exact specifications. At the very least, it provides some people jobs who might not have work otherwise.
"It is what it is," a construction worker said of the neighborhood cattiness. "Because he's got a lot of money, I've got a job. I'm not gonna complain."
Some even found the old building, which could have been eligible for historical landmark status in 2012, an eyesore. A local coffee shop manager told The NY Post the building looked like "an old pile of crap" before its unceremonious demolition.
The residence will most likely be the home of Schwimmer, his wife Zoe Buckman and their daughter Cleo Buckman Schwimmer. Fortunately, the graffiti won't be there- workers scrubbed it off the site soon after it was spotted on blogs Monday.
