Russell Brand Divorces Katy Perry
Russell Brand has filed for divorce from pop star Katy Perry after just over a year of marriage.
Brand, the 36-year old actor, and Perry, the 27-year-old songstress, first met at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Brand hosted the event. The duo married Oct. 23 in a traditional Hindu service in Rajasthan, India, where Brand proposed to Perry.
"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," Brand said in a statement to The Associated Press.
News of the couple’s possible divorce broke when the pair was spotted in two different countries on Christmas Day. Brand was photographed in London without his wedding ring and Katy Perry was photographed in Hawaii vacationing with friends.
Earlier in the month, the pop singer dismissed rumors on her Twitter page that she was divorcing Brand.
"First I'm pregnant & then I'm divorced. What am I 'All My Children'?! #ericakane #pshhh #ifihadadollarforeverytime," Perry wrote on her Twitter page.
Before the split, Brand discussed having a family with Perry on the Ellen Degeneres show. "I really would like one," he told the host. "I love those little babies in the beginning. They're so lovely at that bit."
"For a long while, what I do professionally was all that mattered to me really," he said in March to AP.
"Now I think, well, whatever I do, I'll just go back to her, and that's incredibly comforting," he added.
Brand cited irreconcilable differences in papers filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
